Blue Gallery is proud to present Toward The Within, a solo exhibition of small eye paintings by Amy Abshier.

In the late 18th century there was a brief fad of having a portrait painted of your lover’s eye. These were most often done in miniature, so they were able to be worn in a piece of jewelry.

The original idea was that, by only showing an eye, these miniatures would effectively conceal the identity of the person who was shown.Only someone with an intimate acquaintance such as a lover or spouse would recognize an individual’s eye, so they could be worn openly. They didn’t have to be secreted away like a portrait in a locket.

Eyes have always been my favorite part of the face to paint, and several years ago I decided to give in to self-indulgence and paint just the eyes, all because I enjoyed the process so much. The milky translucence of the white of the eye, the light sparkling along the inside of the eyelid, the variety of colors in the iris: I find them all fascinating. Keeping the paintings on the small side is part of the fun; I like the idea of people having to come in closer to study them. I think they would lose some of their mystery if they were on a larger scale. I also like the idea that the paintings keep the idea of “lover’s eyes” alive.
