Q: What is your studio practice?⁠
⁠
A: I don’t to get paint as often as I would like, so when I’m in the studio I don’t mess around. I try to paint decisively and make choices quickly, and if I’m stuck on a piece, I set it aside and work on another painting for a while. I’m often working on ten to twenty different paintings at a time, and I hang them on the studio wall so I can sneak in and look at them as often as I can, and see if any new ideas or solutions come to me.⁠
⁠
Q: Are there specific movies, books, music or other artists that inspire you?⁠
⁠
A: There’s always music in the studio, and when I’m working it’s usually quieter shoegaze, slowcore, or postrock projects like Grouper, Nothing, Mogwai, Whirr, Explosions In The Sky, Deserta, etc. There are so many artists whose work I love, I have a hard time listing any. But some perennial favorites include Walt Kuhn, Romaine Brooks, Leonora Carrington, John Singer Sargent, Alice Neel, and Pre-Raphaelites like Waterhouse and Millais.⁠
⁠
Q: Women, their autonomy and strength seem to be an inspiration in your work. How has current times affected your relationship to your subjects?⁠
⁠
A: I feel that I need to see strong women now more than ever. My subjects are so much more than just their physical appearance, at least to me. Their presence is important to me, as a cornerstone and as a reminder that I have that strength in myself as well. ⁠

Q: Where do your subjects come from?⁠
⁠
A: The look of them comes from dreams, old movies, antique book illustrations. But their personalities and stories come welling up from someplace inside me, unbidden. It’s like magic, how they just appear. And I can’t say no to their voices, so I try to bring them to light.⁠
⁠
Q: Are they representatives of your personal mythology?⁠
⁠
A: I think they must be. They come from a place so deep inside me I can’t articulate them in any other way. ⁠
⁠
Q: You’ve increased the size/scale of several of the paintings in this body of work. What made you decide to paint larger?⁠
⁠
A: I felt that there were things I wanted to play with that just couldn’t work on a smaller scale. It’s been a real challenge, and is both more difficult and more rewarding than I would have thought. But I’m really enjoying it.⁠
⁠
Q: What inspires you to paint? ⁠
⁠
A: I’ll see a certain color or pattern, or the way light glows around an object, or the way someone’s eye sparkles, and I feel this intense physical need to draw or paint. I never know when it will just hit me, and this also feels incredibly magical.⁠

Luis Garcia-Nerey was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1973. Growing up near the Art Center in Miami, he took an interest in art early on. He attended the New World School of the Arts and went on to pursue his studies at Long Island University, where he honed his skills in painting and sculpture. He lives and works in Miami, and has been a resident artist at the South Florida Art Center since 2007.⁠
⁠
Whether it’s a painting, a wood-based sculpture, or an installation created with found objects, much of Garcia-Nerey’s work is based on the theory of constructionism. In his pieces, he explores how both the individual and society are influenced and created by each other. “[My work] comes from the philosophy of the Self and the Other. I believe that our existence depends on one another. I’m most interested in this interaction. I take this philosophy and apply it to what I do. As you interact with my work, you construct it and it constructs you.”⁠
