Luis Garcia-Nerey was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1973. Growing up near the Art Center in Miami, he took an interest in art early on. He attended the New World School of the Arts and went on to pursue his studies at Long Island University, where he honed his skills in painting and sculpture. He lives and works in Miami, and has been a resident artist at the South Florida Art Center since 2007.⁠
⁠
Whether it’s a painting, a wood-based sculpture, or an installation created with found objects, much of Garcia-Nerey’s work is based on the theory of constructionism. In his pieces, he explores how both the individual and society are influenced and created by each other. “[My work] comes from the philosophy of the Self and the Other. I believe that our existence depends on one another. I’m most interested in this interaction. I take this philosophy and apply it to what I do. As you interact with my work, you construct it and it constructs you.”⁠
